What next? Just when you thought culinary combos couldn’t get any wackier, meet candy sushi! Don’t let the name confuse you, this is not raw tuna meets red licorice wrapped in seaweed – this is one sweet treat, wrapped around another sweet treat, to be stuffed with yet another sweet treat!
I first started making these about 8 years ago when my first born was required to bring a sweet concoction to her very first class party (remember kindergarten?) We were all so eager, with boundless energy and Martha Stewartesque visions dancing in our heads. Ok, maybe it was only me, but I was about to take that plain ‘ole rice crispy square, dress it up in drag and head to the nearest gathering of 5 year olds I could find. Needless to say, back in the classroom, those little eyes were rolling back in their sugary little heads before the party had even started. Even a whiff, sent the little buggers buzzing.
Dare I say, a legend was born. So much so, that for the same daughter’s Grade 7 Christmas party, (with pretty much the same group of kids) when required to write on the board what she would contribute to the annual class sugar bath, my daughter began to write “candy” and before she gets to the second “s” in “sushi” the class has erupted into howls and cheers as if, let me think of an example. Oh, how ’bout this, as if Sidney Crosby had just scored in Game 7, in overtime, to win the gold medal over our neighbours to the south. Now I know this can’t get any sweeter if you’re a Canuck, and isn’t even close if you’re not, but even Hollywood couldn’t have come up with that one! And so speaking of sweet, say hello to candy sushi. And if you think you can’t lose your mind when it comes to candy sushi, think again …
